His two books, The Making of the Atomic Bomb and Dark Sun: The Making of the Hydrogen Bomb tell one just about everything one would want to know about how these weapons came to be. The first book won a Pulitzer.

Highly recommended.

Probably the best documentary I've seen on the subject. If I could make any complaint, it would be that there's almost too much good material. There's a lot to take in, and the pace is fast. Really must-see viewing for anyone with an interest in 20th-century America.
