1. "Never eats alone without his wife" is an odd construction...

... since clearly, if he is dining with his wife, he is not alone. I presume the sense of it is that Mr Pence always dines with his wife except in some instances when he is attending a public function. I think it's a bit of a stretch for the writers to try to make something of this.
