US state faces lawsuit for sub-standard education

The American Civil Liberties Union says the US state of Michigan and the Highland Park School District failed to properly educate the state's children.

The accusation has prompted a class-action law suit - the first of its kind, says hundreds of students from the Detroit-area district are functionally illiterate, and are not reading well enough for their age.

The school district has not responded to the legal action and already facing an $11 million deficit, and so the problem may not be corrected anytime soon.

Al Jazeera's Scott Heidler explains.
