I live in the south bay area and was sitting on the floor ready for the ballgame when it happened. At first I though it was just one of our "light" (for us) quakes.

Then soon we all knew it was like nothing we had ever experienced before and I was on my feet quick. The floor was moving in big waves.
When we got news of what was happening it was really bad. It was tragic, but we lost a lot less lives than in many parts of the world hit by the same magnitude because most our buildings are built much better and of safer materials.

It's hard to realize it's been 27 years ago. Thanks for posting.

Their downtown business area was wrecked, and stayed messed up for years. Loma Prieta earthquake. There was some wrangling around afterward about the richter scale reading 6.9 or 7.1.
