(5,737 posts)For Trump, or anybody, to make light of that or to be so ignorant about a nuclear war is an insult to us that remember those drills. We all watched the news together in the evenings - families waiting for the end to come.

(3,056 posts)So I'm figuring we're about the same age. I also remember looking at my dad as he sat tight-lipped watching JFK address the country during the Cuban Missile Crisis. I had never seen him scared, and even though he tried to hide it from me, he was. He worked for the government. He knew what it meant if those missiles started flying...what they were capable of doing. We lived in New Jersey. He knew his family, his children, would die. I asked him if we were going to go to war. He said, no. Kennedy would handle it. He had faith in his President to do the right thing. But he was scared.
Dad was a Roosevelt Democrat who became more conservative as he grew older...voted for Reagan & Bush. Clinton got him back to the Democrats. I've been thinking about how he would view Trump today, and he'd be appalled...especially at the ignorance. Trump seems to think that nukes are just another toy in the box that he can't wait to get his hands on. Forget the nukes...can you just imagine what this lunatic would do to our troops? I've disliked (intensely) candidates in the past. I had to put my faith in The Constitution being strong enough to withstand the paranoia of Nixon, Reagan's density, Bush the Elder's disconnect, and Junior's hostility, but this is the first time I feel my father's fear from that night. Trump scares me.
