(3,282 posts)Maryland has enacted a 2.5 year ban on fracking, and request new regulations for when the ban lifts. That was shortly after Cuomo banned it in NY state last year. A 2.5 year ban is pretty toothless, and it's likely the industry will be writing those regulations, so that's a bit of a wash.
NY did ban it last year, and Vermont banned it today. I think the confusion on where the ban has already taken place can be laid on the media outlets. Here are the headlines from:
CNN: Vermont first state to ban fracking http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/17/us/vermont-fracking/
Fox News: Vermont becomes first state to ban fracking (no, I won't link to Fox, ugh)
Reuters (a few weeks ago): Vermont poised to be first state to outlaw fracking http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-fracking-vermont-idUSBRE84718720120508
The Fox article does mention:
And Reuters mentions:
So, it may be a confusion of terminology.
After that there are some scattered counties that have banned fracking. You can see worldwide bans here: https://keeptapwatersafe.org/global-bans-on-fracking/
I would love for this to be an issue where we as progressives could come together and say, "Yay! Let's try to stop fracking in more places, 'cause it poisons our water, our air, and is causing earthquakes!" instead of trying to use it as a gotchya for anyone. It's a practice that's gotta stop, so any time someone stops it somewhere, let's ring a bell and have a little cheer.

(10,497 posts)I get very discouraged with the politics in my state. They somehow have managed to avoid the Kansas problem for now, but our schools suck really bad, the roads are torn up out West from all of the big oil company trucks, water quality in the crapper, and our run off is killing the Gulf. At least helping to kill the Gulf since BP and other coastal states are doing their best to kill every living thing in the water.

(9,748 posts)It is almost the same thing. But Cuomo's actions can be reversed with the swipe of a pen by the next governor. Executive actions are only temporary.
Vermont is the first state to legislate a permanent ban.

Cuomo is as establishment as they come and about 90% of the time makes progressive decisions
