which started in childhood at work houses and "industrial schools," institutions whose lofty mission was to educate children and teach them a trade. They generally skipped the education and rented the kiddies out to various industries. Once a girl had aged out of the industrial school system, she was often shunted off to a Magdalene Asylum (or the Church of England equivalent) "to keep her out of trouble." How compassionate.

It was all part of the assumption of the gentry that poor people were poor because they had low morals, especially the women.

You're after my heart today, Ichingcarpenter. Though I never met the woman, she is a soul-mate of mine. Been a fan of hers since the get-go way back when, long before 1994. She was/is one of the most (if not the most) multi-talented artists of my generation. This was one of her best.
