(2,212 posts)But I don't expect Mr. Bastardi to rise to it or, if he takes the challenge, to honor the result. I've debated climate change deniers for countless hours online and I know how they operate. Bastardi will claim--as legions of climate change deniers have been claiming already--that the data are being falsified. No matter how many scientific organizations report that 2016 was the hottest year on record by any number of measurements, the deniers will claim that all the world's scientists and scientific agencies are scheming to trick humanity in order to promote a socialist, big-government agenda.
There is simply no winning with many of these idiots. You can show them exhaustive studies from scientists who have spent decades studying the topic and they flip them the bird. They believe what they want to believe.

(4,585 posts)I gave up debating anything of relevance with him long ago, but the last time he talked his nonsense he was talking sunspot activity, the Maunder Minimum... He stopped short of calling this a conspiracy. He is a pilot flying the mega-rich around the globe, so part of me wonders if he can't accept that climate change is real because his work is accelerating it.

(54,026 posts)It's a cheap (or maybe not so cheap) Mitt Romney gimmick to draw attention to Bastardi's utter bullshit. This is Nye calling him out. Ideally, everywhere Bastardi goes to speak, he's now going to be at risk of being asked uncomfortable questions about his distortion of the climate record.
This is good work.
