(480 posts)Regardless of how you fall on the issue this is how policy is determined in America. Policy is determined by who pays to fund our elections. And since we the people do not fund our elections, our policies do not represent the best interests of we the people.
We have to have publicly funded elections. Period.

(44 posts)I find these truths to be self evident.
Right now there is no way out. Entrenched monied elites outright own all levers of power in this country. There's just no question about it. I predict that this will not change, until the whole government is purged. And that can never happen when the same people control everything (almost) you see and hear in the media.

(9,762 posts)I was thinking of "The Good Earth." Where it talks about wealth concentrating in fewer hands and more misery for the many, until......it reaches a certain point and then revolution happens. Violent revolution. Always. Predictably.
History is an interesting thing....
The current Chinese regime, though undemocratic, is arguably just as responsive to it's citizenry.
Some might point out that they only have one party in power. I think the same can be said for us. There's only so much lipstick you can put on our pig.
And thanks for the welcome. NC

(480 posts)I believe the difference between the Republicans and the Democrats today is that the Republicans welcome and promote a money driven system because it is clearly to their advantage. The system has been so corrupted in that direction that Democrats, to remain competitive, have no other choice than to sell themselves off. So they can keep their seats, but not their principles. That's the cost of staying in the game. That's why, in spite of overwhelming support, we didn't get a public option, and oil companies still get government subsidies. It's a win win situation for the Republicans. They've turned the Democrats into the Washington Generals, professional and perpetual losers. They can win reelections but they are incapable of presenting any true opposition on major issues.

(480 posts)I'm not enthusiastic about voting for people who are clearly compromised. Obama has not dealt with the banksters, because they bankrolled him. We didn't get a public option because congress is in the pocket of the insurance industry, Democrats included. That's where we are as a nation. I'm sure Romney would be worse. What I want is a government who's first thought in any debate is... 'Hummm... what's in the best interest of the majority of the nation?' Yes, I have a dream. Which these days feels more like a delusional fantasy.

(8,127 posts)and the chinese government hasnt been communist in a long time.
money rules everything now.
itd be nice if theyd just set a low spending cap on campaigns/candidates and not allow them to raise outside money .. maybe a fund that all taxpayers put into as a pool for people running perhaps? i dunno. i wont pretend i have the solution, but its clear that money (and the quantity of it) are the heart of our problems.
its going to be a hard problem to fix, because as u guys have pretty much said.. the game is rigged.. they are the hand on the lever..
i fear a massive movement will only be our savior too.. i just wrench at what that might look like though. as a pacifist you hate to see violence for any reason, and such situations dash the notion that violence can be avoided im afraid.
very few peaceful revolutions have occurred/been successful in the grand scheme of history..
such a sad state weve found ourselves in..human beings i mean.

(69,014 posts)I wont be as generous are you by giving a pass to the voters. The voters are just as culpable as the politicians because time after time, they support the politician with the highest amount of Wall street donation, what is so hard about not voting for the guy that is being pushed by our corporate media.
I say if the voters refuse to learn, then let them suffer for it. Dont blame the politicians for playing along, blame the voters for being so dumb. The sad thing about democratic system is the vote of an idiot counts just as much as the vote of a sane person and they are far more idiots than sane and rational people
