I saw a concert with Steve Goodman and John Prine (in my youth) and I was hooked on both of them from then on.

I don't recall hearing him before and was not aware that he wrote this song, not Arlo Guthrie

Goodman saw Arlo in a bar and told him he wanted him to hear a song he wrote. Arlo said "no". Steve said "I will buy you a beer. " Arlo said "ok". Arlo listened to the song and said " that was the best beer I ever had".

The other great song Steve Goodman wrote was a hilarious song about the Chicago Cubs. It's important to note that Goodman was in remission with Leukemia when he wrote this song and several years later the leukemia came back and took his life:

the universe's lousy ironies is that 1984 the year Goodman died was a year the Cubs made it to the playoffs and could have made the series, but didn't due to an unfortunate error. No one ever said that life is fair, but no one has ever said it ought to be that unfair.
things like this always make me think of Stephen Crane's poem:
A man said to the universe:
"Sir I exist!"
"However," replied the universe,
"The fact has not created in me
A sense of obligation."

a long time ago - he was in remission at the time.
His song "Would You Like to Learn to Dance" is one of my favorite songs by anyone.
