Clinton supporters believe that $250K or more a year is "middle class." They see themselves on a pedestal above the rabble and hoi polli. So if you want to talk to thesep oeple, you've gotta use words and idioms that hteir brains can process, such as 'lower classes"

it reminds them where we are, where htey think they are, and really riles 'em up to be reminded that at the end of the day, we're ahead.

Sun Apr 3, 2016, 12:37 AM

It may vary between caucus states, but in MN the precinct caucus elects delegates to the (state) Senate District convention, which in turn elects delegates to the state convention, which elects delegates to the national convention. If a candidate's delegates don't show up for the next stage, they've thrown away that vote.

I'm ambivalent about this process. On the one hand, it lets people who are really interested determine what candidate the party will support. That's good (otherwise, why have parties at all, I don't think that if David Duke shows up with a bunch of supporters, he should get to choose your candidate, if you're not the KKK). On the other hand, it allows the apparatchiks a good deal of control. The precinct caucuses are pretty clean, but the apparatchiks are the ones with the knowledge and experience to influence conventions, and that's when the knives and goon squads come out (those who control the credentials committee, the rules committee, the vote tellers, and the chair of the convention, can control the outcome).

But in this case, yes, Hilary's delegates didn't care enough to show up. So they lost delegates.

You couldn't vote by affidavit in WA without having a specific acceptable, very narrow, reason. So people like this couldn't' vote:

Parents who didn't want to drag their children along, or hire a babysitter.
People in rural areas who lived 2 or even 3 hours away from their county's caucus.
People who wanted a secret ballot because they didn't want their spouse or boss to know who they supported.
People who don't want to sit with a group of strangers to discuss political views.
People who had other priorities on Saturday.
Out of state college students.

Someone told me they should just sign the form and LIE and say they were disabled or had a religious obligation.

Nice. We're supposed to lie if we want to vote without going through a caucus.

Great system.

problem using a search engine.

The first one I happened on was from March 2013, before anyone announced their candidacy for President.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1251&pid=296262

The Washington caucuses are a joke. I went once or twice.

They are deliberately screening out everyone who doesn't have the 3 or 4 hours to spend debating on party platforms, etc.

And there are lots more like this:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/12511102254

If you don't hate caucuses yet, you are likely to before this is over.

Did you know, for example, that in a small Iowa precinct -- one with only 2 delegates -- the candidate with only 25% of the vote would get the same number of delegates as the one with 75% of the vote?

And that precinct delegates are then weighted based on how many people showed up to caucus in the previous Presidential election?

And that in the Democratic caucus there is no such thing as a secret ballot, and the whole process can take hours?

And they don't announce the final vote count -- just the delegate count?

All this is on top of the fact that caucuses are designed to limit voter participation, compared to the number who show up for primaries. If you have a class or a job that conflicts with the caucus time -- tough luck. You don't get a vote.

But we're still stuck with it in backwards states like Iowa -- and my own state, Washington (at least for the Dems. WA Repubs accepted the public preference -- as determined by a referendum -- for primaries for their delegate selection. The Dems hung on to their caucuses.)

This article was written at a time when the writer expected that Hillary would be ahead, but the points remain true no matter who gets the most voters to the caucuses. No matter who wins in actual votes, it is not likely to be reflected well in the delegate count -- unless they are very close to being tied anyway.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/12511122553

Now do you believe me? The caucus system is a very messy process --

in Iowa and in all the other states that still rely on this antiquated system
-- and should be replaced everywhere by primaries.

We have them in my state and I've hated them since the first time I attended one. On top of the problems we saw demonstrated last night, they are non-inclusive, non-representative, and have no secret ballots.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/12511102254

http://time.com/4172793/hillary-clinton-iowa-caucus-bernie-sanders/

The complicated rules of the caucus process are inherently tilted toward equalizing the strength of candidates, especially in a two person race. Only the number of delegates awarded in each precinct will be published on caucus night, which means there will be no official record of the candidate’s share of the voters at the caucuses—a figure that will likely more closely mirror the pre-caucus polls.

As a result, Clinton will be at the mercy of a process little changed over generations, in which candidates can tie the delegate count, even if Clinton has far more support inside the room. If Sanders surprises with an upset, by bringing more caucus goers out, he will face a similar result, which looks more like a draw.

Here’s how it works: Each of 1,681 precincts in the state is assigned a delegate count based on its relative strength of Democratic Party within that part of the state. To earn delegates, candidates are required to meet a threshold—25% in two-delegate precincts to 15% in precincts with four or more delegates—in order to earn any delegates from each precinct. (The vast majority of precincts have four or more delegates, requiring the 15% threshold.)

For the large number of precincts with an even number of delegates, however, Clinton would have to win by large majorities in order to net more total delegates than Sanders. In odd-numbered-delegate precincts, barring a blowout, Sanders would still pick up several delegates.

How Martin O'Malley will be hurt by the caucus system in Iowa.

Unlike in the primaries, where each vote counts, under Iowa's anti-democratic caucus system, only candidates with 15% or more of the precinct vote are assigned delegates.

This will also affect Hillary and Bernie because candidates can have a substantial spread in the number of votes from individual voters, but be assigned the same number of caucus delegates. No one can get a fraction of a delegate, so two candidates with different vote counts can have the same delegate count.

And the actual vote counts are not publicized -- only the delegate counts.

Also, none of the votes are secret ballots. If, for example, a husband and a wife disagree, or an employer and an employee, they have to disagree openly and in public. And they get to try to persuade each other, publicly, to change their votes.

It's an antiquated system but it's what we're still stuck with in states like Iowa and my own state of Washington.

The arcane rules of Iowa’s Democratic caucuses mean that most O’Malley supporters will be ruled “nonviable” if he does not get 15 percent support at a caucus; his supporters will then be up for grabs by another candidate. With polls showing the race between Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Sanders narrowing to a near tie, O’Malley supporters, along with attendees who enter their neighborhood caucuses undecided, could swing the

local precinct (which might be hours of driving if you live in a rural area). And then some people have to be chosen to go to the next level -- at their own expense -- to represent you. And they have to travel even further away.

And when you choose these people to be your delegate you can't really be sure they'll show up at the next level; and if they do, whether they'll be a "faithful delegate" or a "faithless" one.

The only way to be SURE your vote is counted is to volunteer to be that delegate who spends days at multiple meetings, caucusing for your candidate. Most people care about who they elect -- but not that much.

This is practically the definition of voter suppression: make sure most voters won't jump through all the necessary hoops for their votes to count.

That it wasn't meant to be, all about delegates and that Clinton had more so Sanders didn't even have a chance. Why the sudden shift in tone?

My guess is there are already a bunch of sweaty hands typing up legal papers in the late night hours of someone's campaign, trying to see if they can exert some damage control

Seriously, both sides had roughly halftheir delegates staying home. You have to volunteer to be a delegate, so that's over four thousand people total who signed up and then were like "mmmnah, spongebob is on..."

My wife and I were Bernie delegates here and it was a long 11 hrs. Bernie crowd was very enthused and loud as the video shows. In the end as recorded Bernie had 2964 delegates present to Hillary's 2386. This translates to Bernie's 1611 delegates to the state convention to Hillary's 1297. The crowd went wild. It looks like that in the end if all holds up around the state, Bernie will pick up more delegates to the national convention than Hillary and realistically wins the state over Hillary.

Outragious, anti-democratic dirty tricks by the losing Sanders to steal Hillary's delegates.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1107&pid=89068

The Sanders campaign flooded the room with people who had no right to be there, which had the effect of not allowing Hillary delegates into the room. The police were called to remove some of these not-invited BSers.

Also read the committee chairwomen looped Bernie's campaign into a private confidential email from the Clinton campaign which resulted in the Clinton campaign asking that she be replaced with a neutral person.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1107&pid=89070

Also, as documented by one DUer:

There was an email that went out that said if you checked in early (Friday night)...

You wouldn't have to go into the convention as you would still be counted among the pledged delegates for your candidate. I heard a lot of Clinton's folks likely fell for that and didn't show up. The line for early check in (on Friday evening) was about a 2 + hour wait that started at 5pm PST and was supposed to go till 9pm PST. If some of those people were never told, they might have simply not come to the convention today. I got the same email, but since I want to try to go all the way to the National Convention, the Misses and I attended. Glad we did. Dirty tricks and all.

103. Clark County Chair Christine Kramer pulled partisan dirty tricks and must go.

As repprted by the well-repected Ralston Reports:

Kramar is accused of releasing confidential Clinton information to the Bernie Sanders campaign, as you can see from the letter (below), written by nationally known election lawyer Marc Elias.

Re: Removal of Christine Kramer as Credentials Chair

Dear Chair Miller:

I write as general counsel to Hillary for America to request the immediate removal of Christine Kramar as Credentials Chair of the Clark County Democratic Convention to take place this Saturday, April 2.  Throughout Hillary for America’s attempts to engage with Ms. Kramar regarding the credentialing of convention delegates and other matters, Ms. Kramar has publicly engaged in a series of egregious, disruptive and biased behavior that irreparably undermines her credibility to administer a fair and successful convention on Saturday.
First, in an email sent today, March 30, Ms. Kramar exposed confidential Hillary for America (“HFA”) campaign information and data by unilaterally adding a representative of Senator Sanders’ campaign into a chain of email correspondence between HFA, the Clark County Democratic Party and the Nevada State Democratic Party.  As you know, the confidentiality and propriety of data is paramount to any campaign.  Ms. Kramar’s carelessness – or worse – in exposing HFA’s data is plainly unacceptable and must not be tolerated.

Second, in another email sent today to both campaigns, Ms. Kramar engaged in a series of unwarranted and inexcusable personal attacks against HFA representatives, and frivolously accused HFA of engaging in unethical practices in its preparation for Saturday’s convention.  Indeed, it is apparent from Ms. Kramar’s email that she is advocating for positions in her role as credentials chair based on candidate-specific grounds, rather than making impartial decisions that are in the best interest of the tens of thousands of Clark County Democrats who turned out to caucus last month and who wish to participate as delegates to the Clark County Democratic Convention.  Ms. Kramer’s behavior is at odds with the values of Nevada Democrats and the spirit of the primary campaign between Secretary Clinton and Senator Sanders.

In her latest email to both HFA and the Sanders campaign regarding the credentialing of delegates, Ms. Kramar issued HFA an ultimatum: either the county convention proceed on Saturday under the terms agreed upon by both campaigns or the convention be delayed for further discussion and resolution of various credentialing rules.  To be clear: it is and always has been HFA’s position that the Clark County Democratic Convention proceed as scheduled and under the agreed-upon rules and procures.   However, it is my strong belief that Ms. Kramar’s behavior demonstrate that she is not suited to administer the convention in an impartial way according to those rules and procedures.  As a result, I respectfully request that this board immediately relieve Ms. Kramer from playing any role related to the credentialing of delegates or any other party procedures to take place at this Saturday’s county convention.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if it would be helpful to discuss this matter further.

Very truly yours,

Marc E. Elias
