(8,492 posts)After the WI debacle, I was complaining to my faux-Libertarian boss about Citizens United. I mentioned to him that it was said the Koch Bros. were planning on donating $400 mil to Romney. My uninformed, yet still allowed to vote, bosses response?, "Well, maybe Pepsi can donate that much to Obama."
I couldn't figure out what the hell he meant. Then, it dawned on me, 'Koch' - 'Coke'. I said, "No...not Coke, the Koch Bros." He sat there with this dumb look on his face. "You've never heard of the Koch Bros.???" "No."
I just shook my head and walked away. Voter purging should only be allowed for people like my boss. He won't "make a decision" on whom to vote for until "about 2 weeks before the election", but he'll "probably vote for Romney because he likes the fact he's a businessman" or he might "write someone in".
This has nothing to do with this thread.
Great photos! He looks so comfortable/at ease with us regular people. Unlike Romney who always looks like he might catch something from anyone worth less than a couple million.

(8,492 posts)I have conversations like this with my boss on a daily basis. We've known each other for over 20 years, I've worked for him for 13. He's like a brother to me. An uninformed, ignorant, misguided, but kind brother.
Every nite the husband asks "How was your day." I always just say "fine" and wait until he's gotten comfortable before I say, "You won't believe what my boss said today."
Seriously, though...that 20% just ruined my day. We should have t-shirts made, "I'm part of the 10%" in big letters and in small letters "that are informed Democratic voters. The other 10% of informed voters have no souls."

(135,425 posts)Land...er...voting booths.
I bring a lot of people to the polls. I do it for most local, state, and national elections, ferrying several carloads back and forth, but I work very hard at it in Presidential election years. Last time I hauled over a hundred old souls to the polls. It's funny, they all have reasons for voting how they do, and a lot of 'em are just "straight ticket voters." I hear things like "The Republicans wouldn't give you a crust of bread if you were starving," or "Those Republicans will take away my retirement," and I smile and say "That's why it's great you're coming out today." Some vote Dem simply because they loved Jack Kennedy (yes, really). A few of 'em are "Reagan Democrats" who are embarrassed now at their support of that smarmy coot. If I asked them about some of the more complex issues at play, I suspect they wouldn't have a clue--I've tried a few times and it doesn't help, so I don't do it unless someone asks me first. Koch Brothers? They'd think Coke, too!
They do appreciate the whole voting machine fiasco from Bush v. Gore, but fortunately here we have paper ballots that go into an OCR machine, so there's a double-accountability, and voters have to check in to vote, and check out to leave--after their ballot has been accepted by the machine. Not an issue for my community, thankfully. I know none of my riders like Mitt much--a couple of them had to sell their homes and move into a retirement village because their houses were "overvalued" for Mittsy's "circuit breaker" tax relief for the elderly (which sucks, and was wrong--Deval Patrick fixed that). They couldn't afford to stay in their homes, thanks to Mitt, and they resent him for it.

The Koch Brothers Exposed!
POSTED: April 20, 5:15 PM ET | By Julian Brookes
<...>
For years, the brothers shunned the spotlight. David Koch used to joke that the family business, the Wichita, Kansas-based Koch Industries with annual revenues* estimated at $100 billion, it's the second-biggest private firm in America was "the largest company youve never heard of." But when Barack Obama became president, the Kochs, like a lot of right-wingers, flipped out. They threw their weight behind a stealth campaign to turn back the presidents "socialist" agenda..."
<...>
Now the Kochs are the subject of a blistering (but to all appearances factual) documentary by the activist filmmaker Robert Greenwald. Koch Brothers Exposed aims to show how the brothers' machinations affect the lives of "living, breathing human beings," as Greenwald put it to me at the films New York premiere in late March. "When I learned about the damage the Kochs were doing to our democracy, I wanted to make sure more Americans understood what they're up to."
<...>
Koch Industries vehemently denies any responsibility for the cancer deaths in Crossett and touts its environmental record as "exemplary." As ThinkProgress and others have documented, it is not: Koch Industries has been named one of the top ten worst polluters in the country and found criminally liable in more than one pollution-related case, including one involving the discharge of (carcinogenic) benzene. And, wouldn't you know, the company has lobbied hard to prevent the E.P.A. from classifying formaldehyde, produced in huge quantities by none other than Georgia-Pacific, as a "known carcinogen" in humans.
Greenwald lays it on a bit thick here and there, but that's kind of the point. "A lot of progressives really believe that if we can turn out one more white paper with bullet points about how to fix Problem X, we can fix it," Greenwald says. "But that's not primarily the way you reach people or move them. You reach the heart first. What I always try to do is make the political personal."
But you have to ask: Whos going to watch, or even hear about, Koch Brothers Exposed? The film isn't being released to theaters, since Greenwald reckoned few moviegoers would be willing to pony up $10 or more to see a no-frills documentary about a couple of oldster ideologues, however powerful or well researched. So to get the word out Brave New Films has teamed up with 40-plus progressive membership organizations and labor unions to form a far-flung anti-Koch coalition. The idea is that groups and individuals will hold screenings everywhere from their homes to bowling alleys, church basements, college campuses, and union halls. "The ultimate goal," Greenwald told Alternet, another partner, is "organize, organize and then, organize." (Lefty activists are notoriously single-issue, but the all-enveloping reach of the Kochtopus makes opposing the brothers something all liberals can get behind: education, environment, labor rights, campaign finance, corporate malfeasance everyones cause is on the line.) Available via streaming outlets and cable video-on-demand starting May 8, the film has the potential at least to reach beyond the choir into millions of American homes.
