Thom Hartmann: Warning...End of the World as you Know it

It's the end of the world as we know it - and you shouldn't feel fine. What does startling new research reveal about one of the pillars of life on our planet? Republicans aren't just destroying the lives of Americans - they're helping to destroy all life on Planet Earth.

They just finished a study there. 80% die-off of phytoplankton here.

Not sure if it's due to the warmer water, desalination, or inability of sun to penetrate darker water ( last 2 due to heavy than ever river runoff). But it sure does not bode well for the fisheries here. Ground zero of marine life and 50% of all our O2. Time to start practicing inhaling only alternate breaths.

their article was in our local paper just last week (I live about 45 minutes from there). It was a long term study, but the decline was mostly in a short time, which suggests to me that a tipping point was reached for the Gulf of Maine. They weren't sure of worldwide implications, so considered it to be serious alarm, but not panic time.

There are also algae blooms being found in the arctic. Hopefully fish will be able to migrate to better environmental conditions, although with enough tipping points reached, everything just buys a little more time.

Anyone remember when the first predictions of disappearing plankton came out?
I recall reading/knowing of this years ago but cannot place where.
Gore's movie, perhaps?

I gave a speech on this in college over 20 years ago. My research material came from the National Resources Defense Council.
