13. I actually feel sorry for McCain.

He's had a long and distinguished career. He deserves honor for his conduct as a POW. In politics, he's even done a few good things -- not a whole lot, but he has on occasion been a comparatively sane Republican (a low bar, I admit).

Whatever he does, though, he'll never be able to erase that one glaring moment of stupidity.

Some leaders face a choice between doing what's best for the country and promoting their own careers. McCain scored a notable two-fer by sabotaging both objectives.
