(2,672 posts)he'd be happy to release his transcripts, but since he never gave speeches to big banks and wall st. firms, he has nothing to release.
On the other hand, Hillary has given many highly paid speeches to big banks and wall st firms, but she's not going to release them? Why? The answer is because the public will not like what she had to say to them and it would probably doom her campaign, a la Romney's 47% speech.
If she's really a progressive, as she claims to be, why is she trying to hide her transcript? Why not be more transparent?
What's she trying to hide?

(8,175 posts)she is probably hurting herself more by not releasing them. My imagination of what she said in those speeches is probably far more condemning than what she actually said.

(12,586 posts)Why not Clinton? Or is this a case of "leading from the rear"? Isn't this a non-issue, like Obama's birth certificate? The story wasn't the certificate itself, it was his refusal (reluctance?) to release it. The longer she holds back, the bigger an issue it is. Unless she said, "Get me in office and I'll get you everything you want," anything she said would be subject to interpretation, and eventually the issue would die away, except in the minds of a few "birther" types.
She knows the chances of all of the GOP candidates releasing all their speeches is practically zero, so she's safe.

Voters should be grateful for the government transparency laws that required Senator Bernie Sanders, a rival to Hillary Rodham Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination, to reveal how much he made last year in speaking engagement fees. The total is $1,867.42 for three appearances, a grand sum that is chump change in presidential politicking but enough for the senator to respectably donate the money to charity.
Mr. Sanders, the Senates Vermont independent and self-described Democratic socialist, is a far better speaker than those numbers indicate, as his weekly talk radio conversation, Brunch With Bernie, has shown. He has delighted leftist political junkies for the past decade with his iconoclastic broadsides. But the senator doesnt milk his signature New England contrariness for money, not yet anyway.
Loyalists in his fledgling campaign, of course, could not be happier for the contrast with Mrs. Clinton afforded by the disclosure. She has netted more than $11 million for 51 speeches in a recent 15-month stretch, being paid as much as $315,000 per address, with some of it going to charity, according to The Hill. Top dollar for Senator Sanders was a not so hefty $850 paid for a combative exchange with Republican sympathizers on Real Time With Bill Maher, the HBO show where the comedian regularly invites politicians to march to a different drummer. (As a 73-year-old socialist Jew from Vermont, hes everything everyone is not, Mr. Maher happily explained on the air. We love Bernie.)
So far, the senator may stand out most in the race for not having a super PAC to join rivals in circumventing campaign limits on small-size donations and currying favor with rich patrons. I do not have millionaire or billionaire friends, Mr. Sanders declared at the outset, sounding aloof as Thoreau at the money trough. In making a virtue of his campaign hunt for small donations the senator implicitly invites further comparison with Mrs. Clinton. She is reported gearing up to personally court donors for her own super PAC, aiming to garner the 7-figure donations that Senator Sanders can only renounce.

(34,825 posts)Not just other candidates, but if she has to release her transcripts, then anyone who has ever made a speech anywhere should also be required to release their transcripts. That's the logic we're dealing with here, and it's coming straight from the top.

(7,358 posts)Current Rolling Stone article features some of the speeches content due to those present. Of course Sanders is playing nice guy, but really, she is skirting around the issue. We all know even without reading the transcripts what the tone of the speeches were, ''Us" against ''Them" or ''The Banks" against the ''99%" of us. She's a turn coat, and it's going to harm her campaign miserably.

(90,690 posts)RULES FOR HILLARY:
Don't raise your voice to shout like Bernie, don't laugh out loud, don't be cool and cerebral, be warm and approachable, don't reference your motherhood or grandmotherhood, don't defend yourself against lies, be vigorous in your own defense.
Use government servers only (even thought the government keeps getting hacked), don't use a server that is much more secure.
Release your transcripts -- nobody else is being asked to do this.
Bernie was at a whole bunch of high-rolling fundraisers at Martha's Vineyard over the years, I hear tell -- I sure would like to know exactly what he said to those rich folks.
kenfrequed
(7,865 posts)Do you imagine that Bernie Sanders is going to give any speeches at the Vineyard that are anything other than being absolute progressive? I know the Hillary supporters here like to imagine or invent some kind of nefariousness to the Sanders campaign, but I think we all know that he probably gave them at least some version of his stump speech.
Hell, he probably even went after the wealthy bastards a bit. I mean he was completely honest when he walked into the lions den at Liberty University showing crazy chutzpah. He didn't flinch nor did he try to soft peddle his differences from the conservatives there. He told them where they were different without any shame or prevaricating and then told them exactly why they should support him anyways.
But I imagine you have already made up your mind.
Hekate
(90,690 posts)...would give a flying fig about Bernie being at Martha's Vineyard if his supporters hadn't made such an almighty and incessant stink about Hillary's speaking fees and transcripts.
That hypocrisy just reeks.

(7,865 posts)I don't care. I would LOVE to have every single one of his speeches repeated onot the media. Please make it happen. I will sign your damned petition. Do it!
Free media coverage where Bernie's speeches about helping get the working class get repeated a lot? Please make it happen.

I notice the top of the YouTube video says, "Clinton Sarcastically Says She'll Release Speech Transcripts When Everyone Else Does"
I didn't get the sarcasm part, I think she was totally serious.
You are right about that.

(1,252 posts)But I don't it matters anyway. What difference does it make? It isn't what she said in the speeches. The transaction and obscene amounts speak volumes is how I perceive it. What is implied, in my opinion, is that she is one of them and they all will look out for eachother in the 1% but not for the rest of the people.

BUT I'M NOT RUNNING FOR FREAKING PRESIDENT, GETTING PAID $675,000, GIVING SPEECHES IN FRONT OF AUDIENCES WITH VESTED INTERESTS IN PUBLIC POLICY.
