I have four safes and none of them have an electronic lock.

(16,230 posts)I wouldn't put much trust in any safe with a battery powered lock. What happens when the battery runs out?

The batteries are not inside the safe. The keypad and battery are outside the armored compartment.

(958 posts)I stayed at an inexpensive motel once where someone down the way slammed their door. The metal door frame dislodged from the wall.

(5,417 posts)The 9 volt battery outside the safe will provide power you can open and close it when the batteries are dead.

(14,733 posts)So I'm guessing those cheapo front door entry pad locks use a solenoid in there somewhere too, that can be gimmicked like this? That's why he mentioned apartment buildings?

(11,843 posts)Doesn't affect the mechanical lock on your apartment doors, of course. But depending on design, the lobby door may be vulnerable to this method.

(4 posts)I would say better safe than sorry. Whenever staying at a hotel it is better to use the hotel room safes than keeping the valuables in the bag or carrying it all the time. The chances of theft decreases with its use.
