I sometimes miss pop cultural references and I haven't seen any of those films (or read the books).

So, in the Hunger Games there's districts that provide everything for the capital. Everyone in the capital are shallow idiots and everyone in the other districts are separated into specific groups. Farmers, coal miners, masonry, etc. The Capital, in punishment for uprising once before, takes two children from each district every year, and they have to slaughter each other in a very large arena. Only one from all the districts can survive, and everyone in each district has to watch all this happen. Katniss did something in the arena that started another uprising. Caesar Flickerman is from the capital and interviews all the children before they go off to slaughter each other.
