They compile a tape, keeping in all the people who answer incorrectly, and one or two folks who answer correctly, so the average viewer gets to feel 'smarter' because they weren't as bad as 'everybody out there'.

While I understand your observation that video editing can produce nearly any result you want, let's assume that the producers of this video are trying to be good journalists. Accordingly, if they interviewed dozens of people on their campus and edited the responses to be representative of the correct vs. incorrect answers, then their video makes a strong point about young people's level of knowledge.

In fact, their results aren't that difficult to believe and I wouldn't limit the demographic to college students. Try this: ask someone you know who the Supreme Court justices are. Ask them who their congressman is. Ask them when they last voted. In my experience, the producers of this video aren't far off.

Of course, everyone has an opinion about something and often it's based on incomplete or misunderstood facts. Many examples come to mind such as how people view the Second Amendment and it's relationship to all the other Amendments. Or how some people think that "freedom of speech" means they can say anything they want. The producers of this video probably expected the results that they got but, frankly, it's not surprising that these students knew who Snookie is but don't know that the Vice President is.

The low-level of knowledge of our government and civics is profound and it's directly caused by the Republican efforts over the last several decades to degrade public education.

I'm getting signatures for delegate in the 14th US Congressional District in PA on behalf of Bernie Sanders. To be sure, after looking at a street list in that district, I ask the potential signers if they know what district they're in (usually people do not), and if they do not, "Who's your congressperson?"

They do not.

These are people who earned their PhD, their MD... They are librarians, and professionals. They are people who apparently vote, as they are listed as Democrats on street lists.

I believe that this video is a pretty awful, but accurate description of how dull we have allowed our families to be.

"Ah... Honey! What time does Gladiators come on?"

for jaywalking, etc.

The hope in our future is while many are surely dumb about some stuff, their hearts are mostly in the right place.
The majority are, anyway.

I think.

I hope.
