Turkish F-16s Shoot Down Russian Jet Near Syrian Border. (Update)

UPDATE: Russia confirms it was a Russian plane, and claims it violated Turkish airspace by accident (their story has changed a couple of times as to why). But since neither pilot was killed, both Russian and Turkish authorities are saying "forgetaboutit." (Wow, that was a close one. In fact, that might just be the clever story the diplomats cooked up to avoid a 'what does honor demand that we do next' situation. In which case, I applaud the diplomats.)

Well, that didn't take long. With everybody and his brother flying bombing missions over Syria these days, this was bound to happen sooner or later.

Turkey claims the aircraft, which appears to be a Russian-made SU-24, violated its airspace and ignored warnings. Both the Russian air force and the Syrian air force have SU-24s. As sad as it may sound, I hope it's a Syrian SU-24, because if Turkey shot down a Russian plane there's going to be a hell of a stink.

I must not have hit 'refresh'.

I've heard the stories from both sides change a couple of times, but not that they are both backing off. If true, that would probably be the best outcome.

Why never any Israeli planes "shot down" when they violate Syrian and Lebanese air space?........

Especially given Turkey's lack of response to ISIS and their hostility to the Kurdish fighters opposing ISIS.
