The First Amendment does not say what the Supreme Court says it means and what most of us think of it as meaning. It does not grant freedom from religion. About religion, it says only "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." It says nothing about restricting states from establishing religion.

But freedom of and from religion is essential to the American way of life. As long as that freedom is granted only by a Supreme Court interpretation, it can be taken away by another Supreme Court interpretation. How about an amendment to the Constitution that keeps religion out of public life -- federal, state, and local? You know, the way it mostly is now.

I'm uncomfortable with interpretations of law and the Constitution to mean something very different from what they say.
