With the nickname “The Sunshine State,” it would make sense for Florida to be a leader in solar energy in the United States. But industry opposition and a climate change-denying governor have allowed the state to fall dangerously behind when it comes to harnessing the power of the sun.

1. Federal funds to states to subsidize home solar installation are gone, too.

I'm in California and the state had a generous plan to offset the initial cost of solar panels, but the program was basically killed because the money was cut off. Naturally, when money was available, I wasn't thinking about going solar, and now that I want to, I can't afford it without the subsidies.
