(5,927 posts)Mister Cheepers was a sad thing to behold. I was walking in the yard when I saw a bird sitting on a branch calling to me. I couldn't believe that it was letting me walk up to it (I still don't know if Mister Cheepers was a boy or girl). He actually jumped on to my finger and adopted me. Amazing beauty in a simple act.
He died before long, maybe a week and a half. I was a young teenager, didn't really know how to take care of him. I would kill flies for him and he made the most wonderful chirps of pleasure when he chomped them up.
But he must have been in really ill health from the beginning. I found him dead one morning. So sorry I couldn't give you a better life, Mister Cheepers. I did love you.

(32,723 posts)It got old enough to fly in a week and I let it rejoin it's siblings before they all left the nest.

(46,585 posts)I rescued Bart, a Rosella (Australian) from a pet store. He had about 3 feathers and was being fed the wrong food. He had been a breeder and sold to a family with a 10-year-old kid who manhandled the poor thing such that he hated being handled after that. I found though that in his cage, he was the sweetest thing, cooing, doing his Stevie Wonder bobbing head thing. Of all my pets/rescues which have included mainly cats and dogs, I miss Bart the most. He lived for 20 years with me.
He was such a character. He'd break out of his inside aviary and fly around the house when at the time I had 3 cats and a dog. He loved trying new fruits and vegetables. During the day when I'd be working in my office, he would whistle and I'd respond, and that would go on until he was done with the game. The day he died was the most precious day to me. I was there for his last breaths. For a couple days after that I could have sworn a bird outside in the eucalyptus grove mimicked his same happy whistle. That was a few years ago. Still a couple days ago, I heard that same sound and without thinking took a breath to respond, just a split second, but it brought me to tears. God I miss that bird.
Thanks for posting this. It was bittersweet for me. Cheers.
