The cure for racism is knowing and being exposed to blacks and their culture. A good example is the gay rights movement. Once gay people started coming out of the closet in large numbers people found that they knew several people who were gay and found they were not really different from themselves.
Most racists don't really know any black people. They see a different culture and physical characteristics, but they don't realize how alike we all are. We all have the same hopes and desires, a better life for ourselves and our children, respect, education, and an equal chance at making our way.
Ms. Van Lew was surrounded by blacks and was friends with them. She saw the horrible treatment and life of slaves and knew it for the abomination that it was.
