What they actually do is prevent people from touching their noses and mouths with contaminated fingertips, the most efficient way for cold viruses to be transmitted.

In the heavily polluted cities in China, they likely offer protection against the larger particulates on coal smoke, a real advantage there.

Thanks for sharing that mask story. I find it interesting from a whole different angle: how people go about their daily lives; the little "tools" they use to remember or repeat without having to remember.
