When I was living in Japan on a cultural activities visa. My shakuhachi teacher was also a shakuhachi maker by trade, and his artistic name in that craft was "Sesshu" (literally, 'Snow Islet') which was also the name of a famous Japanese painter. Life is art in Japan, and so many young foreigners in my day were in Japan to study a traditional Japanese art. You have Bushido, or Martial Arts, Sado, or the Way of the Tea Ceremony, Kado, or the Way of Flowers (flower arranging), etc... The final "DO" suffix means "Way", as in the Tao. By the way - the opening shots of this video were of a shakuhachi class. Natsukashii, desu ne! (Nostalgic, isn't it - at least for me.)
