(129,255 posts)on his show for an interview. She is a fascinating individual. And interestingly enough, a similar subject was broached in the famous Dr. Seuss book "The Sneetches" -

(2,142 posts)Jr. High Literature. Many of my classmates had her as a 3rd grade teacher. My second cousin was in the original class that she did the exercise on.
She was a very good, but tough teacher and most people either loved her or hated her. Her original exercise caused quite a stir in the town and obviously, was quite controversial. I'm just a few years too young to know or remember what went on, but I've seen the documentary that PBS did, and learned about all of it after the fact.
I remember what a strange experience it was, when in my first year of college, she was mentioned in my Psychology textbook!

(278 posts)going to the Youtube page, where these videos are uploaded. The comments from the white people are an incredible expression of ignorance, hatred, lack of empathy. Which is the very lesson that she was trying to teach. These commenters just don't get it. And that is why the Confederate flag still flies in the South, that is why white people make fun of people playing the race card, and that is why Ronnie Rayguns is revered in the Repug party.

(19,288 posts)We all needed this to refresh our memories.
What is telling is that after the blue eyes take on a feeling of second class citizens they begin to even treat each other as such.
It's not easy to be an egalitarian. The feeling of having discriminating taste and judgment is heady. Nice to feel like you are better. But cha know what? There is always somebody better than you.
I like the story DonJaun tells Carlos about the humility of the warrior and the humility of the beggar. The warrior treats everyone the same despite their circumstances. The beggar treats people differently. He fawns and scrapes and bows to people he feels are his superiors, and feels diminished. Yet, when the beggar meets someone less fortunate than he, he speaks down to them, because he consider their worth to be less. We should all strive to be warriors not beggars.
