I'm old enough to remember what it was like before Civil Rights. Yes, we had a maid, whom I loved dearly. I remember her once saying "We aren't SLAVES". This was in the 1950's, and I was concerned, but really did not understand what she meant until years later. I was able to visit her before she passed away and I know she cared about us girls, who had recently lost their father.
