Golden Gate Park smoke haze on 4/20 at 4:20

**Pot Smokers** Light Up in Golden Gate Park for Annual 4/20 Celebration

One of the biggest celebrations for marijuana supporters kicked off at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on Monday.

Every year on April 20, weed enthusiasts, with joints and bongs in-hand, flock to San Francisco to celebrate the 4/20 “holiday,” whose numerical nickname stems from the Bay Area.

According to Huffington Post writer Ryan Grim, five San Rafael High School students created the term in 1971 while on the hunt for marijuana plants in Point Reyes. They planned to meet after school at 4:20 to begin their search, and used the phrase “4:20” as a reminder when passing each other in the halls. From there, it grew into a code word and an unofficial April holiday.

Now, the unpermitted, unsanctioned 4/20 event garners plenty of police presence, as well as the attention of park rangers. Police Sgt. Ron Meyer of the Park Station told SFist that he expects between 5,000 and 15,000 people this year since it falls on a weekday.

I don't even know anyone to buy pot from... and even if I did, I am pretty much broke today..I wish they would legalize it like they have in Colorado, so I could walk to the store to buy some!

Though I suppose Golden Gate Park would've been the place to be. Just stand to the left of someone

I used to live in the Haight Ashbury district. Not far from where the Jefferson Airplane had a house, so I was told. Things have changed a lot there. Its so commercialized its not funny. The outside might look the same, but the attitudes have changed.. its all about the green now.
The folded kind.

At the end of the Haight there is a McDonalds, which is a popular hang out for cheap food. That's what I mean.. while there are lots of folksy kind of restaurants, there is also that... I never go in there.

Why aren't they protecting us from these drug addicts?

We could have from 5000 to 15000 people in prison from just this one mass arrest.

Ronald Reagan would never have put up with this decadent debauchery.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of these perverts later had sex while under the influence.

Where are O'Reilly, Hannity, and Jesse Waters while this is going on? I am looking forward to their "SPECIAL REPORT".

7. A Different Take

While I voted to legalize pot in my state, it was only because so many people were in jail for it and this was not fair. Now I am seeing what I think is a glorification of Marijuana. I worry that young people today will get caught up in it. It destroys ambition and serious work. I worry that young people today are turning away from politics and the dream to build a better world. I see the nation's youth as
going for the "opiates" of cocktails culture, gourmet beer culture, pot culture and techno and film culture, music culture and the glorification, deification of sports. These are all distractions while the whole ship of the world is burning down. The bad guys are taking over and where is the push back against the evils of greed, war and corruption.

what are you doing about "greed, war, and corruption"? How do you know what these people are doing or not doing about "greed, war and corruption? I think you need to get out and evaluate your worldview against reality. People celebrate marijuana as a protest against the forces of repression, and it works! Whether or not some people are "turning away from politics" does not mean that they are turning away from the dream to build a better world. What do you think the people on DU care about? Besides, if we waited for a perfect world to have fun, we'd never have any fun. Party on, and welcome to DU.
