This short, titled 'A Boy And His Kite,' showcases Unreal's ability to generate graphics in real-time at 30fps with fully dynamic direct and indirect illumination, cinematic depth of field and motion blur, and procedurally placed trees and foliage.
Note: As an ex-programmer, I am blown away.

(45,358 posts)It is easily the most complex application I've ever used, including all of the pro 3D apps.
I've used the "flow-chart" type programming language before (for particles in 3D Studio Max), but nothing remotely as complex as Unreal. I figure that learning it will be the equivalent of learning all the ins-and-outs of at least five different jobs, so I'll need a little time. Like maybe a year or two.
That said, I have already made a few basic games far beyond anything I've ever made before. It's stunning that they will run on any system right out of the compiler.
Edit: BTW, since you didn't mention it, the Unreal Engine is FREE!

Impressive, but I miss the minimalistic feel of games like Doom...

You choose.
It all depends on your preference for close-in combat.

(45,358 posts)But I bet we will in the next decade. Maybe the AI could create the game in real-time, just like the graphics engine. Hmmm... A game that builds itself as you play. Note to self.
Wonder what kind of games quantum computers will come up with? Will they allow us to play their games?

Aaaaand that's when Skynet kicks in, according to Elon Musk.

(45,358 posts)Previews are real-time as well with full effects, motion blur and DOF, no compiling. It's ~thiiiiiis~ close to looking like reality.

Full-on more-than-virtual reality.

(7,395 posts)I think the viral plasmid DNA technology is going to be the topper. People will be able to make themselves into actual Orcs. Godzilla. Brad Pitt. Anything. One prick of the hypodermic, and three months later you're a completely new being.
Dangerous and thrilling. There will be laws passed to regulate it, and then there will be the usual scofflaws, and away we go.
Which Godzilla -- that is the question.
