'Hidden South' humanizes poverty-stricken rural Georgia

A picture is worth 1,000 words and Brent Walker, the photographer/storyteller behind the photography blog The Hidden South gives those photographs of drug addicts, prostitutes, the homeless, and the mentally ill a voice.

Maybe not all, but I know for myself personally, it gives me a feeling like someone is actually willing to listen to my story and take an interest in me.

I've been a "counselor" in my past career, and I've seen counselors for various issues in my life. It's always been beneficial to be able to bounce my story off someone and be able to get direction of what is going on with my life. If you've seen a counselor, psychologist, psychiatrist, "therapist"; you know what I'm talking about.

So many people on the street just want someone to care, someone to listen to them and empathize with the shitty cards they've been dealt, and words of encouragement are so precious.

Once you get past the "being threatened stage", just plain talking with someone can be helpful. You don't have to give answers...just listen and show you care with your empathy.

Poignant example of how even a little bit of kindness does giver and recipient good.
