The joke—if that's what it was—bombed, drawing nervous laughter and groans from the crowd."

But that is impossible.

What makes comedians funny is their wry observations and the way in which they share these observations with an audience. The best comedians are very good at doing this. We all remember Carlin's great performances.

Back before Dennis Miller lost his mind he also made wry observations and he was funny. Dennis was never Carlin funny, but he was far funnier than he is since he adopted right wing politics.

The problem with conservative comedians is they can not make wry observations. Because their audience has an agreed on version of reality that is simply untrue and therefore remains outside the scope of what we perceive as funny.
