(14 posts)Only 4% of foster kids graduate college due to utter poverty, lack of resources, and no family or community support when they get kicked out at age 18. I was one, but I didn't even make it to college until my 30's after scrimping for 17 years.
Mitt only recognizes people like him - no one else counts or matters. In his world they don't even exist.

(17,865 posts)All Iowa Opportunity Foster Care Grant
Students who age out of Iowa's foster care system, age out of the state training schools, or who are adopted after the age of 16 may qualify for the All Iowa Opportunity Foster Care Grant program.
This grant can be used for any college expenses including tuition, fees, books and supplies, dorms and off-campus housing, meal plans, transportation, and personal living expenses.
Grant amounts range from $2,210 - $7,670 per year.
The higher figure would just about cover tuition at one of the state schools.
For our state it is pretty generous. We don't have much for grant or merit aid to the state schools. The grant aid goes to kids attending the Iowa private colleges.
Not to detract from your argument because Romney's comment was an utterly foolish thing to say. In our state if your family makes anything above $50K you are pretty much out of luck for grant based aid. Merit aid is also pretty scarce (unless you count the merit aid given by private colleges which only knocks some of the edge off their high tuition). Coming out with $30K of student loans from the public college is typical even if you work.
