The explosion occurred west of Donetsk around 22:50 local time (20:50 GMT) and caused a shock wave that swept the city. In many parts of Donetsk felt a shock and detonation destroyed windows. According to the data of social networks, the explosion was felt even in the neighboring cities of Makeyevka and Gorlovka.
.As of 12:30 a.m. Monday, there was an on-going violent bombardment of Donetsk by cannon artillery and multiple rocket launchers.
As it turned out, the epicenter of the explosion was in the Kuibyshev region, near a Donetsk state chemical factory. The roar and the glow from the blast was so strong that it could be heard and seen are tens of kilometers away by residents of the Textilschik neighborhood.

(19,362 posts)but a vacant chemical plant would cause that huge of an explosion?
jimlup
(7,968 posts)they would be able to detect the fallout radiation.
Then again - if it was - they might just not bother to tell us...

(5,069 posts)their special forces might have caused it.
rogerashton
(3,920 posts)at least today.
Actually, there could be good reason for keeping it secret, since open acknowledgement could make nuclear war more likely.

(5,069 posts)But I wouldn't rule it out - US special forces cut their teeth on demolition and US Navy Seals started out as UDT (underwater demolition team)....Special forces/CIA operatives are behind the coup in the West....this has happened before.

(7,875 posts)Plus the fact that the cameras were still working after the shockwave hit indicates there was no EMP. However, if enough flammable stuff were ignited all at once, a fireball like that would seem a likely result.
Also, for the Lost In Translation file; Let's not assume that 'vacant' = 'abandoned' when it could just as easily mean 'nobody working at night', or 'temporarily shut down due to shelling'.

(19,362 posts)The district chief Kievski of Donetsk, Ivan Prikhodko, wrote on Facebook that the explosion occurred in the village of Peski , west of Donetsk.
I don't know if it is accurate but there it is

(9,897 posts)Its a little uncanny for an "accident" to be randomly filmed - in dead center frame - from two opposite directions...

(10,274 posts)People film stuff like that. Its likely a industrial source that blew.

(19,362 posts)that's huge what was in that building pretty combustible
leveymg
(36,418 posts)As one would expect if it were an ammo dump that went up during a bombardment. Strongly doubt anything nuclear but very powerful blast.

(2,830 posts)have said a "humanitarian convoy" exploded. That's a pretty hell of a big explosion, not likely nuclear, but still pretty large...
lovuian
(19,362 posts)Serious? what's so combustible with food .....where's the media on this?
toddwv
(2,830 posts)Russia's version of a humanitarian convoy likely includes a fair amount of arms and ammunition.,
Again, no official confirmation.

(45,274 posts)I was about 2 miles away & thought they were nukes going off in the 1t Cavalry Division ammo dump. The dump had been hit by 122mm rocket fire, and all sorts of artillery rounds, aerial rocket artillery arounds, flares, illumination rounds, etc. were exploding. I was sitting out on a sandbag bunker watching the show.
Then BOOM! Something just like on that film. I rolled backward off the bunker, convinced I had been nuked.
Turns out it was a 50,000 gallon tank of helicopter fuel (which is basically kerosene) cooked off and vaporized in the heat & exploded.
Over the course of the night, 3 more fuel tanks went off just like that. This was just before the 1st Cav air assaulted into Khe Sanh to dig out the Marines, so the ammo dump was holding about 3 times its normal supply of munitions when it went off.

(36,418 posts)That was during the day, and didn't attract as much western public attention. What we saw last night wasnt a nuke - the EMP would have knocked out the digital video recorders. The rebels claim Kiev hit a nearby chemical factory with a Ballistic Missile, reportedly a Luna-M.
The same complex was hit last Fall by what was the rebels say was an SS-21 missile. There was a huge explosion close to Donetsk, a city of one million. This war is getting awfully dangerous:

(10,274 posts)A powerful explosion rocked a chemical plant and set it on fire Monday outside the separatist stronghold of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. Rebels said the plant was hit by government shelling.
No casualties or damage were immediately reported from the blast, which could be heard in downtown Donetsk. The city lies in the middle of Ukraine's industrial heartland and explosions like this have long been feared.
An armed conflict between Russia-backed separatists and Ukraine government forces has killed more than 5,300 people and displaced more than a million people in eastern Ukraine.
The rebel mouthpiece Donetsk News Agency said Monday the chemical plant to the west of the city was hit by a Ukrainian artillery shell but the fire was put out and it posed no danger.

(1,712 posts)Apparently the Russians had 20+ GRAD missiles, launchers, and a bunch of other ammo coming in, all grouped rather tightly. The Ukrainians sent it home, air mail. The explosion was no joke, and could be felt 10s of kilometers away.
