(62,270 posts)Just ignore it, if you see clickbait crap, then take the title, get a general sense of what it's going for, and search for alternate views.
Don't bite.
It's very similar to creationist or climate change denialism. Fear, uncertainty, and doubt. Sowing those things causes people to not know WTF is going on, and they believe anything that makes sense, rather than looking at the bigger picture. Yes, creationist arguments and climate denial arguments, in a vacuum, make perfect sense, but they're not true.

(3,982 posts)Media reporting has become tabloid, shallow, and manipulated.
Investigation has been replaced by narratives. Behind the scenes economic and political powers corrupt or threaten it.
It truly is one of the biggest issues of our time. How do we create dependable and (mostly) truthful media in the modern age? Especially when it is difficult to keep the average viewer's attention long enough to provide depth on a report?

(62,270 posts)Just throw so much random shit out there no one knows what to think about anything at all. Include, notably, false narratives, and people start "questioning" the "veracity" of a given report. M17 comes to mind.

(6,829 posts)Ties in with the concept that the people we have running everything only give us stuff to worry and fear about. ISIS, as one example, came to be as a result of America's war crime invasion of Iraq in 2003. This proved the use of the Nazi "Big Lie" to fool all of the world all of the time works exceptionally well in the present day. (And there's mounting evidence Saudi Arabia bankrolled the 9-11 terrorists. Oops, we invaded the wrong country! A mistake criminally incompetent to the point of bona fide treason and war crimes)
We are indeed being bombarded with propaganda and we are being told to think and perceive what the oligarchs want us to think. There does seem to be a never ending stream of the distracting and worrisome crisis of the week. Ebola came and went. Whats up with the investigation of Petreaus? How many more abortion clinics have they shut down in Texas and other religious fundamentalist states? They're coming after our Social Security, like they have since it's inception in the 1930's? Why do they want to take away something so nice for all of us that we fucking pay for via payroll tax in the first place? How come the economy is "getting better" if so many of Obama's economic policies have been blocked by obstructionist sabotage Obama even if you have to wreck America to do it? When will the next Wall Street Bubble burst and are there going to be riots in the streets if the taxpayers have to bail out the Oligarchs within mere months after they nullied that critical part of Dodd-Frank? Isn't this just too blatant and brazen for criminals to make the formally illegal perfectly legal so you can steal billions from the American Taxpayer again? The MIC is brazen also. Now there's rumbles of a new world war triggered by ignorance belligerence fear and stupidity or maybe even more of this stuff from the video? And hasn't our drone program burning alive a lot more people than the poor pilot's murder by burning (full tape including spoken propaganda viewable on fox, I've heard?)
The end result is that by some Amazing Coincidence our Oligarchs are getting even more obscenely and unseemly wealthy by such things as for profit war and Fascist TPP of by and for the multi-national corporations getting shoved down our throats by a complete end run around what's left of our Democratic republic.

(3,982 posts)I am talking about election politics, but it really is the same thing. Once we get to the point where we replace substance with narrative anything is possible.

(62,270 posts)Since at least 2004-2005, imo. Narratives rule the place. CNN headlines literally rule GD on any given day.

(50,983 posts)Obviously Saudi Arabia did it at the Neo-Con's behest. But we are not allowed to say that.
It isn't a conspiracy theory if it's true.
Oh, another unmistakable coincidence is the way personal bankruptcy laws were changed right before the meltdown. Geez.

But says nothing about our own manipulators of reallity...but demonstrates how it is diverted to other concerns.

(1,835 posts)We are making progress on social issues and I can buy a great soy latte in the morning and frequent my really amazing whiskey bar with Edison bulbs at night. Who really cares if the peons and proles are backsliding?
Have you been to that new, really great vegetarian Ethiopian restaurant? Let's go sometime. I can show you my new hot idiot app!
