Save Hawksbill Turtles from Deadly Nets

Save critically endangered hawksbill turtles from deadly lobster gillnet fishing practices.

Hawksbill sea turtles inhabiting the eastern Pacific Ocean are one of the most endangered sea turtle populations on the planet. Less than 500 nesting females are estimated to remain, and the main cause of their population decline is unsafe fishing practices. Lobster fisheries in Nicaragua use unsafe gillnetting that unintentionally kills over a hundred hawksbills a year. We urgently need to remove these nets from the sea and reduce by catch mortality in order to give hawksbills a chance at long term survival.

The Eastern Pacific Hawksbill Initiative (ICAPO) is spearheading activities to reduce hawksbill bycatch from the unregulated lobster gillnet fisheries at two primary hawksbill hotspots. The use of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) attached to gillnets has proven an effective tool to reduce marine turtle bycatch in several fisheries in the eastern Pacific, but has yet to be tested or implemented in any lobster fisheries. ICAPO is working to remove deadly gillnets from use, while testing safer nets equipped with LEDS. The initiative will also employ ex-lobster gillnet fishers to perform year-round fisheries observations, and to engage with other local fishers to raise awareness of the negative impacts of their practices.

You can help. Just $12.50 removes 50 meters of deadly lobster gillnets from the sea.

ICAPO's mission is to protect and recover hawksbill turtles in the eastern Pacific Ocean, while improving the socio-economic conditions of coastal communities that rely on these resources for their livelihoods. They achieve these goals by sharing information, raising awareness, forming alliances, conducting research and initiating conservation, and by empowering local community groups with the tools and means to lead ecologically responsible and economically beneficial projects.
