even though it is not from their herd, and the aunties will raise the orphan as their own; each and every baby is wanted, coddled, and watched after; each member is deeply mourned at their passing; herds are matriarchal and the bulls are only allowed around when the females are in estrus; elephants will remember each other even if it has been over 50 years since they have seen each other. If they were bestest buddies as children they will still be big buds in their senior years.

I wish we could afford to give each elephant their own personal guard to stand watch and let the herd's prosper in peace.
