(5,636 posts)I volunteered when Ted Kennedy ran for president and as a result of my work on that became a paid field coordinator for the Carter campaign. I read tons on Carter because I was involved in local debates representing him, spoke with local town media, etc. And I had a hell of a time defending his anti-union stands, his pro-nuke stands, his pro-military stands, his occasional race baiting, his bringing religion in a big way into government, his anti-regulation policies, his complete lack of an urban policy, and so on. Since leaving the presidency, he has done some good things, but even today on issues like gay marriage he thinks it should be left to the states. Carter's conservative values laid the groundwork for Ronald Reagan. Carter helped push the Republican Party to the right, because they sure as hell weren't going to move to the left. In my opinion, having Carter on our side on some issues is great, but let's not laud him for occasionally getting something right.
