Related: About this forumRing of Fire: Can We Save Social Security?
During the Bush years, the Republican Party tried desperately to privatize Social Security, and put it into the hands of Wall Street bankers. This idea was sold to the public by telling them that the system was broken, and that it would soon run out of money. That talking point didnt fly with the American public, but that hasnt stopped the attacks on Social Security a program that works, but actually does need some help.
Ring of Fires Farron Cousins and attorney Seth Katz discuss whats happening.

(62,325 posts)anymore. When Bush tried his '50 state' trip to try to finally accomplish the decades-long attempt to once again privatize that fund, he was sent home by the American people, despite his 'popularity' as a war President, which they thought he could use effectively, after only a few states. It was a disaster and began the plummeting ratings he never got back.
Only a Dem can accomplish what has failed each and every time a Republican tried it.
We'll see I suppose.

(18,998 posts)Eliminate the cap altogather...we all pay the same percentage.
Raise the minimum wage and wages in general...
But no means testing...once you go down that road it becomes welfare and it is not welfare but social insurance.
And actually if those two were done the trust fund would be growing so much they could reduce the percentage we all pay.

What war?
Believe me, we will have more war, bigger and more unnecessary than ever as soon as we get another Republican president.
