"The Fappening—a rather disgusting term for one of the biggest celebrity news stories this year—saw the wide and very public release of intimate photos of dozens of female celebrities. One of the highest-profile names in the pile: Lawrence. But instead of just quietly releasing a statement through a publicist, she broadcasted her anger far and wide.

“It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime,” said Lawrence in an cover story interview with Vanity Fair. “It’s a sexual violation. It’s disgusting.” Lawrence’s words echoed much of what had been said by writers in the aftermath of the photos appearing online. Yet to hear one of the victims so publicly rejecting the kinds of terms used in the past was inspiring. Lawrence showed a determination to hold the thieves responsible for their crime—something that culture vultures everywhere were challenged to do this year as well. It’s to her credit that she was willing and ready to lead by example."*
