Russia declared war on Japan and invaded Japanese territory (Kurile/Chishima Islands) just after the Hiroshima bombing, and battled Japanese forces, eventually seizing all islands in the chain and a few others to boot, one just a mile or two from the island of Hokkaido. While the invasion ended in October 1945, Japan and Russia have never signed a peace treaty since then, and the southernmost islands, which are still held by Russia, are still a bone of contention between the two countries.
