"The White House worked closely with liberal House Democrats last week to torpedo a tax deal that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) was negotiating with Republicans.
The unusual move to kill a Reid-backed proposal has raised suspicions among Senate negotiators about the White Houses motivations. They believe President Obamas team is eyeing a broad corporate tax reform deal in 2015, when Republicans will control the Senate and the House.
It might indicate less about the merits of the package and more about the White House using progressives to kill a deal now in order to pave the way for a deal with Republicans next Congress that progressives will absolutely loathe, said a senior Senate Democratic aide.
The administration joined forces with the House Democrats with one thing in mind: making sure a possible veto wouldnt be overturned."* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola (TYT University) break it down.

It is used on us over and over again, and it always seems to work.

(18,124 posts)for killing this bill are not what they seem. The operative words in quote to me is, "might indicate". Not, is the reason.

(96 posts)Anyway you slice it there is little transparency in what goes on in politics, period.
The good news in this is that, at least for the moment, the deal brokered by Harry Reid, has been scuttled. That is indeed good news as far as it goes.
But, as much as I support this President and am ecstatic we didn't have McCain or Romney in the White House, he is not the liberal many believe he is.
Yes he has done some terrific things from the Lilly Ledbetter Act to the ACA to eliminating Don't Ask Don't Tell, etc. He saved the auto industry and, despite Republican obstructionism, likely the U.S. and world economies.
He talks about income inequality and may favor an increase in the federal minimum wage. But I have no doubt that any plan to reduce corporate rates will NOT also include eliminating any loopholes and other giveaways. It will be the biggest handout to corporate America we have seen in our lifetimes. There will be virtually nothing in it for Main Street but everything for Wall Street. That is not surprising when you look at his support for the TPP and who he has had heading Treasury. These are all Wall Street people.
I agree with TYT's that he failed to achieve any bi-partisanship during the first 6 years. But now he can use the Republican majorities to achieve something bi-partisan but only bi-partisan in terms of giving Republicans everything they want in the name of bi-partisanship. It will be something to add to his presidential record.
I hope I am wrong but I see much discontent and heartache among liberals during this President's last two years. He may act on things like climate change, immigration, etc. (all of which I support) but on core economic issues I think he will act more like a Republican than a progressive.

(12,882 posts)Your "handle" is well reflected in the last paragraph of your post. For Civil Rights matters, our hopey-changey guy gets a wobbly "C" grade. For matters of high finance and corporate thievery, an "F" is as good as it gets.
I don't CARE what John Edwards did with his cock or his wife (the presidentcy is RIDDLED with infidelity - some by some of the most esteemed folks to ever grace that office!), he'd have treated the American populace better than this. The TPP alone, is more of a screwing than Monica or Marilyn could EVER dream of.
