(68,644 posts)Wouldnt you want to know if your doctor was a paid spokesman for a drug company? Or held personal beliefs incompatible with the treatment you want? Right now, in the US at least, your doctor simply doesnt have to tell you about that. And when physician Leana Wen asked her fellow doctors to open up, the reaction she got was unsettling.

can't do videos so I hope for explanations. People generally just post the video without additional info.

(1,648 posts)What she did needs to be done by hundreds of drs. in order to get some "trews", y'know. Big Pharma has really corrupted so many drs., they need to develop a spine and act like true healers...or suffer...or get out of the job. Thanks for posting, I'm posting on FB.

(2,069 posts)But in this country as it is now, the general rule seems to be profits over people. Yikes! This video made me really scared to get anywhere near a conventional doctor! You gotta google up all kinds of possible gravy trains and conflicts of interest that your prospective doctor might be into that could jeopardize the course of your treatment before you ever go ahead and give your consent. It's a jungle out there. Doctors don't have to disclose these things, and their conflicts of interest the same way that we don't require labeling for GMO foods - and probably a zillion other ways that profits are put ahead of people, and the care and fair treatment they so badly deserve.

(8,267 posts)I have a medical practitioner where I live who is like Dr. Wen. She's not a 'medical doctor,' but in the first twenty minutes I saw her in her clinic, she told me more--and more respectfully--than any medical doctor I've ever seen. I trust her, and I know that she is giving me excellent care, because SHE cares and is totally transparent.
Full disclosure: I have long had a distrust of doctors. I was pre-med at a private university (until I 'flunked' Dr. Dunning's first physics exam), and found that we had not a single course on nutrition or exercise or any of a number of life experiences that affect health! I remember sitting in our study carrel with our study group, divvying up our syllabi. I made the remark that we were not given courses that discussed nutrition or ways to prevent sickness. One of my colleagues (now a medical doctor) spoke up, "I'm not interested in health. I'm interested in disease. I'm in it for the money, and disease means more money!"
Thanks for posting this TED video!

(63,912 posts)I had a real health scare and discovered that I was sodium sensitive. It was a bit scary for a bit but I started looking at what I was eating. Surprise, surprise, I was eating too many frozen prepared meals with huge sodium levels. I had to completely re-order my diet and by default low sodium meant fresher foods, prepared in such a way to bring out flavor without added salt. Nothing goes in my mouth without a sodium check. Luckily, there are low sodium solutions for out of season vegetables and I seek them out when fresh stuff just isn't available.
My blood pressure is now stable and life is a lot better.
