(8,515 posts)since my mother gave birth to me, her sixth child, in 1941. There was to be one more. I don't know how she did it or why. I know there were condoms in the house when I was six years old. She never stopped working and she also worked a job with pretty long hours. My older siblings took care of the younger children until she arrived home. I never heard her complain, though she was not enormously happy with my father. In addition to her job, she also was a seamstress and had regular customers, and she had a paid position as nursery attendant at our church. My father was a womanizing alcoholic, though he had a good union job. We had good health insurance.
She finally divorced him when I was sixteen. Her life was very hard, and only now can I understand her pain. My father dominated her completely and part of that was keeping her barefoot and pregnant. There was no effective birth control, and abortions were unheard of. There were also no good jobs for women and no chance of any but the wealthy going to college. My, how times have changed, but not changed. Some men still want a chain around their "woman's" neck attached to babies. Young women need to see what damage the GOP is trying to do and start protecting themselves before they lose all we attained for them, at great physical and mental expense.
