Ring of Fire: SCOTUS Destroys Fundamentals of Democracy

The U.S. Supreme Court recently began a new term, and as their first order of business, they decided to issue a ruling that severely cut back early voting in the state of Ohio. The court’s previous term had given us decisions that gutted the Voting Rights Act, forced religious views on everyone, and gave corporations even more influence over our elections. This next term could deliver some equally damning opinions.

Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins and attorney David Haynes discusses what we can expect from our corporate Court.

Ohio recently enacted some voting laws, R.C. 3509.03.

The USG either sued or joined in someone else's suit. (I don't have all the info yet.)

A federal district court said the Ohio law was unconstitutional. The Secretary of State then said he was not going to enforce the new laws that were declared unconstitutional.

I guess the SCOTUS is saying that what Ohio did may not be unconstitutional, but I don't know exactly what the SCOTUS did because I have not yet found the full text of the opinion.

But the Secretary of State now say that he is essentially cancelling his former statement.

I have no respect or affection for this court. But, I don't think it helps to say the SCOTUS shortened the time Ohioans have to vote or anything like that. The Supreme Court does not have the power to change state law, only to say if state law is constitutional or not-and then only if someone sues.

Ohio did it. That's where Ohioans still can--and should--start, with their very own state legislature.
