(6,440 posts)One of the religious right's complaints, and one that actually has some justification, is that people are not taking the persecution of Christians in the Middle East seriously. I think there's some truth in this, but I wonder if there is an element of the Boy who Cried Wolf at play here. People have become so used to hearing Christians scream about persecution every time a store clerk says "happy holidays" that when genuine persecution arrives, it barely registers in their consciousness, because they have learned to tune it out.

(2,146 posts)of the methods the Church leaders use to keep their flock - fear, separation, and hate. As is taught today, the basic message of Christianity is: "something bad will happen to you after you die, and we have the only prevention. And if you don't believe as we do, then something bad will happen to you. And those people over there are out to get you." So the premise starts with fear of the unknown, and, to reinforce it, the Church leaders introduce persecution and sin to keep the flock scared, in line, and not asking too many questions. And those who ask too many questions get pitched out as heretics real quick. They need blind faith to make the machine work. What that becomes is blind rage and fear. And, I will add, this is polar opposite of what Jesus taught, but for sure, do not even say that to them.

(20,018 posts)I've heard the same thing a few times. Sadly, not from any of my religious relatives (who could tell me directly any time they want).
I think it would be worthwhile for churches to organize some type of campaign to inform/remind the public of the Gospel quotes that fly in the face of all the hostility and selfishness that typify the current public face of their faith.

(6,943 posts)Over the last ten years, we've transitioned from a traditional church into a 'New Testament church'. We still have services, Sunday School and the like, but we now also operate a soup kitchen, a food pantry, a homeless shelter and a low-income utility, medical and dental-assistance program.

The majority of my friends/family are Christians. They don't think like this.
So, yeah, to our Christian DUers, we aren't going to force you to take ownership of this twit. We know better. Most of us, anyway.

The average citizen who has the plutocratic boot of day to day life on their throats because "government doesn't work" are disgusted that we have knuckle dragging dumbasses in office like this and become disillusioned enough to disengage from the political process all together.
As a result, knuckle dragging dumbasses like this who hate government get re-elected prove that "government doesn't work"
Lather, rinse, repeat.

(11,495 posts)Republicans need to get out their voters so they use things like this to rally those who are gullible enough to believe this crap.
As has been stated by others here, all christians are not the same, and the ones republicans want to reach are the fanatics, the ones who believe only republicans can stop all the "persecution" they "think" is being done to them.
Some high control religions use the same kind of tact is to keep their followers in line, and to convince them "they" are the ONLY true religion and if you leave their group, you are doomed.

(50,557 posts)First, our government is not "perpetuating laws that lead citizens away from God."
Second, there was no concentration camp in Berlin. There is a jail called Plötzensee Prison that was used to execute Aryans who were sentenced to death by Roland Freisler's People's Court, which prosecuted dissidents. The "concentration camps" were far from population centers.
Third, no one was executed with "a bullet through the throat" - executions at Plötzensee were conducted either by guillotining or hanging - and no one was taken to an execution under guise of going to a medical examination. (That's what the Bush administration did to some of Saddam's underlings. Seriously.) Everyone who was executed at Plötzensee had been sentenced to death by a kangaroo court; they knew what was coming.
And finally, his numbers are only about 350 percent off: according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plötzensee_Prison, the Nazis executed 2,891 people at the only place in Berlin where they did it. I've been to the Plötzensee Memorial. It's creepy as hell, but not quite as creepy as Republican State Senator Charles Perry of Texas. The shit the Nazis actually did was bad enough; no embellishment is necessary.

I've never seen so many big budget Christian movies coming out in such a short time frame. And all from liberal commie Hollywood.
If we're persecuting Christians in this country, we're not doing a very good job of it.

(14,061 posts)Are Christians being compelled against their will to wear symbols on their clothing to show who they are?
Are their places of worship being raided, vandalized, or burned?
Are their books being burned?
Are they being forced off of all media?
Are they being rounded up and sent away?
Are they free to trot off to their places of worship whenever they want?
I think the answers to all are pretty obvious. So, Senator, your comparison not only is a huge FAIL, it is a huge insult to those who DID suffer through Nazi Germany. So, please -- STFU.

(8,964 posts)Especially when "persecutors" suggest that we should not be forcing religious beliefs onto other religions with fewer followers. No doubt European Jews had similar issues with the Nazis not wanting to go along with them. But wait a minute -- the Jews were not in the majority, as put-upon U.S. Christians are. Oops, might this be a seriously botched analogy on the part of this State Senator?
THIS is the idiocy we're up against. WHAT LAWS are being passed 'against religion?'
I know, none...they are pissed that laws are NOT being passed to PROMOTE a (their) religion.
These people are the most dangerous out there, religious whackos.
