What an amazing creature! You really have to wonder what evolutionary forces propelled it toward such gigantism.

... but I'd venture to say that in each generation, the smaller members of the species were getting eaten by carnivores. Since this dino's tail was robustly muscled to be used as a weapon (which means a good amount of the animal's caloric intake was expended in building and maintaining such muscle mass), clearly fending off predators was a significant evolutionary pressure.
