(14,549 posts)in adapting to the changes now well underway. In a story untouched by mainstream media the USDA is promoting no-till farming for corn and other crops.
No-till is a significant change in approach from the more dominant kill and till technique. Kill and till uses defoliants / herbicides to kill plants growing in a field. While tilling does the same, kills plants, but uses mechanical means to do so. The problem with Kill and Till going forward is that in drought conditions and in extreme rain events, tilled soil is loose and therefore it does not retain moisture at the surface level. Loose soil can be blown or washed away.
No-till uses the presence of other plants, even dead ones, and their roots to retain moisture and nutrients at the top level of the soil. I encourage everyone to tune out the bogus "debate" and move on to the solutions and adaptations to the new normal.

Leaves one with the unsettling realization that it's up to us, now, to do some drastic things to change and shrink the economy, shut down the fossil fuel industry, and protect wild nature.
Long overdue. http://deepgreenresistance.org/en/
We need energetic and widespread creative solutions. Now.
