President signs expanded domestic violence legislation
Advocates for gay rights, others hail added protections

WASHINGTON — President Obama signed expanded protections for domestic violence victims into law Thursday, renewing a measure credited with curbing attacks against women a year and a half after it lapsed amid partisan bickering.

The revitalized Violence Against Women Act also marked an important win for gay rights advocates and Native Americans, who will see new protections under the law, and for Obama, whose attempts to push for a renewal failed last year after they became entangled in gender politics and the presidential election.

‘‘This is your day. This is the day of the advocates, the day of the survivors. This is your victory,’’ Obama said. ‘‘This victory shows that when the American people make their voices heard, Washington listens.’’

snip

The law authorizes some $659 million a year over five years for programs that strengthen the criminal justice system’s response to crimes against women and some men, such as transitional housing, legal assistance, law enforcement training, and hot lines. One element of this year’s renewal focuses on ways to reduce sexual assault on college campuses. It also reauthorizes the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, adds stalking to the list of crimes that make immigrants eligible for protection and authorizes programs to reduce the backlog in rape investigations.

I'm nowhere near as good at it as you. I'm a pretty good backup in a bar fight, but that's a whole different skill set. Not a particularly widely admired one either in a delicate little flower as myself, yet I hope the surprise factor makes up for it a bit.

I miss the dojo. Might be getting older and slower, but I can still reach most people's knees. My nickname in those days was the Sicilian Girl. Of late I've been looking for my inner Gandhi, but some days he's nowhere to be found. Have to end my morning prayer with, "... and please help me be nice to at least one Republican today."

BTW, many people misunderstand the true purpose of martial arts, which is self mastery. I just like to trot that reminder out once in awhile. Not aimed at you (certainly) or any particular individual. It's simply one of the best life lessons I was ever given, even if it cost me terrible discomfort at times. But I do believe it's helped put the brakes on the natural human tendency to lie to oneself in the many ways we all manufacture to one degree or another.

It also helped cement liberalism in my soul. Does the human soul immeasureable good to get its butt kicked by a great variety of other people in a socially sanctioned, closely monitored environment. I mean realistic humility, not a crushed spirit.

3. I love President Obama but he shouldn't give the torturers a free

ride. They should face charges. They violated a US and international law. It's not Obama's call, of course. But they should face charges either here or abroad.

It is one thing to support President Obama, but you must remember that if we allow this torture to go without at least bringing charges, we do not know who the next person to be tortured will be. Or the next person after that.

Could be you or me or someone we love.

Torture is a crime per se. There is no argument about it. It is a crime, and it should be charged as a crime.

12. True, to a degree; but why, dear heart, do you say in one breath

that President Obama shouldn't (therefore presumably does) give torturers a free ride - yet in the next breath state correctly that it's not his call? That is self contradictory.

He has called them out in public and created quite the firestorm as a result. I'm terrifically impressed. All the executive power in the world can't and shouldn't give him or anyone else complete free rein to mete out deserved punishment. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Since it isn't his personal call in this instance, let's pressure those who are responsible for bringing the matter to justice. Even a sideways hint that he surely could've done more if he chose is counterproductive, a waste of time, and ultimately unjust in itself.

That said, I certainly agree with President Obama AND you about the unacceptability of torture.

lately and when I did I see the usual suspects and others are all in a lathered frenzy over "Folksgate"..

And, we're all "sanctimonious" according to President Obama because we hate that the bush-cheney coup were torturing people. Nah, I don't let others put words in the President's mouth and tell me what they think is going on with him. "Folks" have been trying in vain to do that for over 4 years now.. and they're really bad at it.

Don't blame you, not in the least. Sadly those that say they are or were supporters of this President never really were.

So many believe that we are blind and stupid. Ya know what , they are. Sadly they are.

An excellent picture! Spot on. And yes, for now I will hang in there.

I love ya Cha!

But sometimes when I see an OP by you or certain other compatible souls, I'm too tempted to resist. Otherwise DU would quickly grow unbearable for me as well. I don't like to use thread trash or blocking because I want and need to see what's going on wherever I (rightly or wrongly) stick my long nose. And then there are posters whose very name as OP author alerts me to discretionary avoidance.
