Dont be fooled Russia Today is trash
Take a venture into the sometimes enlightening, often depressing, world of online activism and journalism and its likely youll see clips from a news organisation called Russia Today. This organisation paints a grim picture of the United States in the world of Russia Today, the USA is an oligarchical tyranny, where the establishment conspires to silence brave truth-telling crusaders.
Youll see cynical and almost always conspiratorial reports of groups the the Bilderberg group, who seek, ostensibly, world domination. Take a gander through the various videos the organisation has published on Youtube and youll see a bizarre combination of Syrian regime apologism, anti-American hysteria, and embarrassing populist pandering, not to mention the 9/11 conspiracy theory peddlers who frequent its airwaves.
To an outside observer stumbling upon Russia Today, you would be forgiven for thinking that the organisation is a brave one, shining a glimmer of light into the murky depths of Western hypocrisy. Wikileaks editor Julian Assange even presents a show on the news station kudos to them for giving him a platform.
But Russia Today has an agenda, an agenda easy to work out from five minutes of basic research online. The network is owned by RIA Novosti, the Russian news agency 100% owned by the Russian government. Initially founded during the Second World War as the Soviet Information Bureau, RIA Novosti has transformed into an international, glitzy news agency, and Russia Today is their baby. Lets be clear about this this is a news station owned (and undoubtedly influenced) by a government that has murdered journalists and political opponents, acts in a framework of institutionalised corruption, rigged elections, and committed war crimes against the Chechen people. This government is no friend of freedom and democracy, yet you would think that it is from the trendy, glitzy, and anti-establishment Russia Today.

(7,321 posts)This op chooses to ignore the fact that American Media does exactly the same thing as RT, which WE should be MORE concerned about and take issue with daily and not merely by a mile.
RT isn't the only State Sponsored News organization out there. and seriously, it isn't exactly on the mainstream radar in this country.
But Fox, CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, and yes even PBS are ALL State/Corporate sponsored/controlled (read Department of Misinformation and Disinformation) "news" outlets.. which frankly is far more insidious in OUR Culture than RT could ever hope to be.
Deal with that with the same level of concern would give your concern as expressed in this op with a bit more credibility and interest.

(6,419 posts)the only thing comparable to RT in the USA is FOX News. If you get your news from FOX, yr brainwashed, and RT is even worse

(7,321 posts)Yeah FOX is really glaringly bad, true enough. But failing to recognize that CNN is nearly as bad as FOX, only better by degrees, is quite telling. Once you begin to recognize how CNN is as bad as FOX, maybe with "nicer" personalities, I'll be happy to discuss why I assert PBS News Hour in the mix of Propaganda products delivered by the Ministry of Disinformation/Misinformation Dept, or aka Pentagon B[/broadcasting Station.
And by the way, I purposely refuse to support FOX, CNN, MSNBC et al, vis a vis cable or satellite. I use a digital antenna, and pick up only local PBS and local stations. Never have I been a Fox viewer. MSNBC is too right wing for me.
You know, It's pretty lame to have to qualify on this level to so called fellow "liberals".

I mean what better way to get more views and get discussion going. add in a a little tendency of some toward ethnic bigotry along with a little red-baiting and pretty soon liberals who ordinarily don't say much will start posting arguments.
Well known phenomenon in human nature.

I don't think that's right and RT should be banned from the vids same as from LBN.
If you click "alert" on each RT video, you could help be a force in getting rid of RT even in vids.
Here is their email on the subject of allowing Putin TV on DU:
That said, if a specific story can be shown to be more than just propaganda, crossing the line from an implied conspiracy theory to claims that are clearly in the realm of woo or hate speech, that could possibly be locked by
Here are some of skinners remarks on RT from Ask the Administrators. While it deals specifically with GD, the verbiage in the SOP is the same for the other main forums except LBN.
This one is a bit long, so go to the link, but it basically focuses exclusively on LBN and recommends a case by case review approach in that forum:

And here are some typical comments on dealing with sources outside of LBN:
***********************
"As for discouraging unreliable sources, the advice is pretty much the same. When someone posts an unreliable source, reply to the post to explain why it is wrong. And send it to a jury so they can decide whether it should be allowed."

LBN only permits reputable mainstream sources. GD does not have that limitation.
If a source is not reputable, people can reply (or send it to a jury) and explain why a source is not reputable. It all comes out in the discussion.
Having said that... if a source is a kooky conspiracy site or a hate site, then it might not be okay in GD either.

The Latest Breaking News forum is specifically for "reputable mainstream news websites and blogs"
For the purposes of enforcing the LBN statement of purpose, I have no problem with hosts treating Russia Today as not a reputable mainstream news source. It's bankrolled by the Kremlin for a reason.
If a particular news story is credible, it'll appear in some other source that is reputable, and you can post that source in our Latest Breaking News forum. Here's one:

And in case you aren't aware, a jury ruled on the first posting and let it stand, 5-2.
You are free to try a jury again with the second posting and if it is hidden that would be another factor for hosts to look at when evaluating the first one.
If you have any questions, let me know.
