(3,003 posts)It's easier for companies to write off old hardware (And in this case, old can mean last years model) then it would be for them to go through the effort of donating it. And while selling off the hardware sounds like it would be a good idea, selling it off opens them up to being taxed on it.
I worked a temp job for a few weeks, for a company that was replacing (Throwing away) all of their ' old and outdated' hardware with new stuff. I cried a bit inside seeing a number of expensive components, and entire computers, just being tossed into plastic containers for dumping.
...I 'saved' a number of things, as did the other temps and the permanents. The IT head knew what was going on, and he told us that as long as we didn't try taking entire tubs full of stuff, and left the hdd's alone, then he wouldn't care if some things vanished before they were trashed. (Goes without saying, but he also saved some things.)
